Monster Toyota Camry Has Two Engines, Seven Cylinders, And Zero Apologies

Thumbnail
Toyota held a corporate build-off competition between its performance divisions, Gazoo Racing and Toyota Racing, to create the wildest customized vehicles. The results were revealed at the Super Taikyu series' 24-hour endurance race at Fuji Speedway. Gazoo Racing focused on track-inspired modifications, while Toyota Racing aimed for a street-focused, "kaido racer" aesthetic.
  • Gazoo Racing's Camry featured a white exterior with wider fenders, a large rear wing, front splitter, canards, and rear diffuser. Its powertrain is a unique dual-engine setup with a three-cylinder engine powering the front wheels and a four-cylinder powering the rear, resulting in a seven-cylinder configuration. The interior was modified with a removed rear seat for a fuel cell and engine, plus a roll cage.
  • Toyota Racing's Camry drew inspiration from "kaido racers," featuring a long hood extension, deep adjustable front spoiler, large overfenders, and a massive rear spoiler with a star cutout. It also sported sky-high exhaust tips and a bold green and black paint scheme with faux sponsor decals. The radical interior included a fur-covered dash, a whiskey glass-inspired shifter, a crystal cigar tray, a crystal chandelier, and hollowed rear seatbacks housing large speakers. The car was converted to right-hand drive with a manual transmission and a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine.
  • Gazoo Racing ultimately won the competition, as voted by attendees at the event, with its dual-engine Camry impressing over Toyota Racing's flashy design.
