A powerful 7.8 magnitude offshore earthquake has devastated parts of the southern Philippines, resulting in significant casualties and widespread damage. The tremor, the strongest this year, has prompted immediate disaster response efforts from the national government and international allies.
- A magnitude 7.8 offshore earthquake struck the southern Philippines, causing at least 35 deaths and over 200 injuries. The quake, the strongest of the year, hit near Mindanao at a depth of 33km. Several low-rise buildings collapsed, and a landslide in Glan killed 13 villagers. Tsunami damage was reported in a coastal village, with smaller waves observed in nearby regions and as far as Japan. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered class cancellations and directed disaster agencies to act swiftly. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated the tsunami threat had largely passed, and Philippine officials lifted the warning. Most deaths were attributed to building collapses and falling debris in affected southern provinces and islands. The Philippines' location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" makes it prone to seismic activity. International support has been offered by the United States, France, Japan, and New Zealand.
